Prof. Peter Gbewa Hugbo

Prof. Peter Gbewa Hugbo was born on 22nd September 1939. He attended Government College Ughelli for his SSCE and HSC from 1953-1959. At the tertiary levels, he attended Sunderland Polytechnic, College of Pharmacy in UK from 1961-1966. From there, he proceeded to Chelsea College, University of London (1969-1973), University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada from 1994 to 1995. From these higher institutions attended, Prof. Hugbo was able to bag his B.Pharm, M.Pharm and Ph.D. respectively.

The new Pro-Chancellor was a member of many professional bodies such as Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (1968); Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (1976); Nigerian Society of Microbiology(1983); International Institute of Pharmacy Management (1976); Chairman, Nigerian Association of Academic Pharmacists (1984-1988), Fellow, West African Post-Graduate College of Pharmacists (1992) and Fellow, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (2000).

Prof. Hugbo has worked as a full and adjunct lecturer at the University of Ife (1973-1976); University of Benin (1979-1985); University of Lagos (1985-1986); West African Post Graduate College of Pharmacy (1992); Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, UNIBEN (1990-1994); Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy, Niger-Delta University (2005-2008); Vice–Chancellor, Western Delta University, Oghara (2008-2014) and presently, the Pro-Chancellor of Michael and Cecilia Ibru University(MCIU) (2018-). As a lecturer, he has lectured at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. In addition, he also gathered a lot of pharmaceutical experiences in Lagos and UK respectively.

To his credit, Prof. Peter Hugbo has been published in 46 national and international papers. In the same vein, he has delivered 27 lectures in many universities, organizations, companies in Nigeria and Ghana. At the international level, he delivered 8 conference/congress papers in Nigeria, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and Canada. Equally, he has served as a Board Member and Chairman of many learned journals. Not only that, he has served at different times and for several years, as an Examiner and Assessor at OAU, Ile-Ife, ABU Zaria, UNIJOS, UNN and Nigeria Institute of Pharmaceutical Resource and Production, Abuja.

Prof. Hugbo has distinct himself in many areas of endeavor. He received several federal government scholarship awards when he was in Government College (1952-1960) and Sunderland Polytechnic (now University of Sunderland (1961, 1964-1966). He received the best Pfizer prize award in Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology (1963/1964) and Fellowships at ICI Travel Fellowship (1980), May and Baker Travel Fellowship (1981), CIDAINSERC Research Fellowship (1994 and 1995), Galaxo Nigeria Travel Fellowship (1993), and currently, Lifetime Achievement Award, Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (2015).

Prof. Peter Hugbo’s hobbies are photography, gardening, travelling, current affairs and fish farming. He is happily married with three (3) children.
