Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies

The Department of Theatre Arts and Film Studies is expected to commence academic activities in the 2019/2020 academic session. Like other departments in the Faculty of Humanities and Arts (FHA), the department is certain to enjoy a degree of autonomy in its academic and administrative activities, subject to the overall control of the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Arts and the University Senate. At present, the department has no students’ enrolment.

In line with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Average Standards (BMAS) for Undergraduate programmes in Nigerian Universities (Information Technology), the department is expected to offer a four-year degree programme leading to the award of the Bachelor of Arts (B.A) in Theatre Arts and Film Studies. The department would enable the students to obtain a general grounding in all aspects of Theatre Arts and Film Studies.

Theatre Arts and Film Studies concern life and the expressions of the realities surrounding it. The course focuses on the concrete means of displaying the cultures, traditions and other aspects of man’s existence. 

The Aims and Objectives of the programme are:

  1. To equip students with a good knowledge of the main principles of the theory and practice of the Theatre Arts and Film Studies.
  2. To train students in the Arts of the stage and creative insights.
  3. To prepare them for further studies in the discipline or prepare them for relevant careers in the managerial cadres of administration, in teaching, in broadcasting for radio and television and in cultural arts centres.
  4. To increase the understanding of the various techniques in Theatre Arts and Film Studies over the centuries. To this end, a six-month industrial work experience at a Studio to study Production and Commercialization shall be undertaken.

Admission requirements are in two categories namely UTME and Direct Entry

UNIFIED TERTIARY MATRICULATION EXAMINATION – UTME

In addition to general admission requirements, usually 5 Senior Secondary School Level Credits or its equivalent, including the English Language. In addition to the above Credits earned at the SSCE or its equivalent should be discreetly chosen from amongst subjects in the Arts, the Social Sciences and the Sciences. This is with due regards to the specific nature of the discipline of Theatre Arts and Film Studies with its Social Sciences, Science and Arts. Besides, Theatre Arts has not yet begun to feature as a subject at the primary and secondary levels of Nigerian Education.

 

DIRECT ENTRY

Only Candidates that have obtained at least a Diploma in Theatre Arts with a cumulative grade point average of not less than 3.00 points may be considered for Direct Entry. A’ Level passes are not acceptable for direct entry into Theatre Arts and Film Studies.

4.50 – 5.00         First Class

3.50 – 4.49         Second Class Honours (Upper Division)

2.50 –  3.49        Second Class Honours (Lower Division)

1.50 –  2.49        Third Class Division

0.00 – 1.49         Fail   

 

The class of degree to be awarded will be based on the final CGPA attained at the end of the programme as follows:

4.50 – 5.00         First Class Honours

3.50 – 4.49          Second Class Honours (Upper Division)

2.40 – 3.49         Second Class Honours (Lower Division)

1.50 – 2.39         Third Class Honours
