Industrial Mathematics

Department of Industrial Mathematics

The aim is to raise a group of mathematicians who can think logically and approach real life problems in analytical and creative ways, use development of mathematics as a tool for innovations in science and technology and to provide its students with a broad – based knowledge of Pure and Applied Mathematics with some emphasis on the following areas Mathematical modeling:

The objectives of the programme are to equip the graduates.

With an understanding of the fundamental principles of Pure and Applied Mathematics.

To raise a group of mathematicians who can also use development of mathematics as a tool for innovations in science and technology.

To a raise a group of Mathematicians that can apply their problem solving and data analysis skills to a wide range of fields, including.

 Banking and finance (maximizing profit and minimizing loss/risk)            

Epidemiology (modeling of infectious diseases and their dynamics)

Information Security (coding, cryptography)

Environmental modeling (resources biodiversity, weather and climate)

The entry requirements shall be at least credit level passes in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry to form the core subjects with credit in one other relevant science subject at the Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent. In addition, an acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) into 100-level is required.                          

Since degrees in Nigeria are graded from first class to third class Degree Levels; it is crucial that procedures for the attainment of these classes of degrees are clearly spelt out as follows:

 

  1. 4.50 – 5.00 First Class
  2. 3.50 – 4.49 Second Class Honours (Upper Division)
  3. 2.50 – 3.49 Second Class Honours (Lower Division)
  4. 1.50 – 2.49 Third Class Division
  5. 0.00 – 1.49 Fail

 

The class of degree to be awarded will be based on the final CGPA attained at the end of the programme as follows:

          

CGPA  CLASS OF DEGREE

4.50 – 5.00  First Class Honours

3.50 – 4.49   Second Class Honours (Upper Division)

2.50 – 3.49  Second Class Honours (Lower Division)

1.50 –  2.49    Third Class Division
